Growing up in Oklahoma, Garth played many sports and earned a track and field scholarship to Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with a degree in advertising in 1985. Afterward he headed for Nashville to follow in the footsteps of his musical hero, George Strait. His first efforts at a career in country music first met with total failure, interesting, considering the fact that he has sold 81 million albums, more than Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley or the Beatles today.

Being a bouncer at a nightclub led him to meet his wife Sandy Mahl while breaking her up from a fight.  They married in 1986 and a year later he took another shot at the country music scene. Brooks co-wrote half the songs on his first album, and one hit that rose to number 4 on the 1989 country charts. His next album in 1990, No Fences, sold more than 13 million copies on the strength of the hit singles "Friends in Low Places" and "The Thunder Rolls." The video for the latter song, featuring a controversial and frequently banned depiction of a battered wife driven to murder, is often shown by counselors in women's shelters. But it was Brooks' Grammy-winning third album, Ropin' the Wind, that set records. Seamlessly blending traditional country sentiments and the driving, emotional intensity of rock, it became the first LP in history to debut at number 1 on Billboard's pop and country charts. All told, the broad crossover appeal of his first three albums allowed him to sell, according to People magazine, "more records with more velocity" than any other artist in country music history.
